The Basic Wilderness Survival Course (BWSC) is an immersive training program designed to equip participants with fundamental outdoor self-reliance and bushcraft skills. The curriculum is specifically tailored for survival situations in tropical environments, moving individuals out of their comfort zones and preparing them for unexpected emergencies in the wild.

This course is built for anyone who wants to transition from being a passive visitor in nature to an active, self-sustaining outdoorsperson. It focuses on developing a resilient survival mindset, self-reliance, and the ability to adapt to tough scenarios with limited resources.

Course Format & Logistics

  • Duration: 3 Days, 2 Nights (Wild camping activity).

  • Schedule: From 7:00 AM on Day 1 to 12:00 PM (Noon) on Day 3.

  • Location: Camp NT, Sapangdaku, Cebu, Philippines.

  • Environment: A authentic, rugged tropical wilderness setting. To simulate a real-world survival experience, this is a wild camping trip with minimal to no modern amenities.

  • Physical Demand: Moderate to high. Participants will be hiking through the forest, crossing streams, navigating uneven terrain, and completing hands-on outdoor field assignments in unpredictable weather conditions. Sturdy footwear (shoes or boots) must be worn at all times when moving.

What You Will Learn

The BWSC goes far beyond textbook knowledge, providing hands-on training from highly experienced, practical bushcraft instructors. Core areas of instruction include:

  • Survival Mindset & Character Building: Developing the mental stamina, confidence, and resilience needed to face unforeseen problems and panic in the wild.

  • Tool Knowledge & Crafting: Mastering the proper use of fixed-blade knives and pruning saws, including functional woodcarving and tool-making (such as carving personal eating utensils from local bamboo).

  • Primitive Fire-Making: Learning survival fire-building techniques using minimal or limited resources to secure warmth, cook, and signal for help under tough conditions.

  • Foraging & Plant Identification: Identifying practical tropical flora and learning to forage safely for alternative outdoor food sources (such as learning to source local proteins like tree snails).

  • Trail Tracking & Navigation: Fundamental wilderness navigation and tracking skills to keep your bearings or follow specific routes in dense forest covers.

  • Outdoor Self-Sustainability: Learning the principles of bushcrafting, camp crafting, and how to utilize what nature provides to build physical comforts.

Prerequisites & Age Requirements

Unlike advanced medical or rescue tracks, this course is designed to be highly accessible.

  • Prerequisites: None. Anyone from absolute beginners to experienced hikers looking to test their limits can enroll.

  • Age Requirements: Geared towards older teens and adults, though specific minor entry guidelines can be verified during registration. Minors must be accompanied by a participating parent or guardian.

What’s Included & Gear Requirements

Registration Includes:

  • Training venue access and site fees.

  • Expert instruction from certified, experienced survival cadres.

  • BWSC Event T-Shirt.

  • BWSC Official Certificate of Completion.

  • Course giveaways.

Required Participant Gear (Self-Provided):

Participants must be fully self-sufficient for the duration of the 3-day camp. You must bring:

  • Shelter: A highly waterproof tent, tarp, or hammock setup with a rain fly. Tents are strongly recommended so you can safely secure all of your personal and survival gear inside while training simulations are ongoing.

  • Clothing: Comfortable outdoor clothing suited for changing weather. Reliable rain gear is mandatory, as tropical weather in Cebu is highly unpredictable.

  • Food & Hydration: Enough food to cover seven meals. Meals for the first day must be entirely ready-to-eat (requiring no cooking). Bring at least 1 to 2 liters of drinking water and a reliable water filtration system. Natural spring water is available at the campsite for those comfortable drinking from a natural source.

  • Cooking Kit: Camping stove, cooking set, fuel, and a personal mess kit. While traditional campfires are integrated into the survival lessons, portable camping stoves are suggested for everyday cooking convenience.

  • Illumination & Power: A flashlight or headlamp with plenty of spare batteries, along with a power bank to keep phones and devices charged.

  • Cutting & Survival Tools: A sharp, fixed-blade knife (which must be kept in a secure, sturdy sheath at all times) and a folding pruning or camping saw.

Even better, after dining from flambéed taklong, which we gruelingly foraged for, and quenching on natural spring water; I am happy to say I remained diarrhea-free 😀

    My sincerest appreciation

The Basic Wilderness Survival Course (BWSC) was a truly fun, enjoyable, and unforgettable 3 days deep in the forest—an incredible way to experience nature at its best and toughest scenarios. The survival simulations were challenging but exciting, and I thoroughly enjoyed every part of it. Learning skills like knife knowledge, tool making(carving a spoon from bamboo!), foraging for food(we ate tree snails numnums), plant identification, and trail tracking were invaluable and practical.

Despite the full 3 days of rain and cold, it was an appreciated part of the course because it pushed us to adapt our mindset and focus on being self-sustaining. The instructors and organizers were professional, highly knowledgeable, approachable, and friendly—yet casual enough to make it feel like we were all buddies learning together.

One of the most unforgettable parts was learning survival fire-making techniques with limited resources—it was tough, but it built stamina, resilience, and a stronger mindset.

Overall, this course is an incredible experience for anyone interested in wilderness survival. It’s not just about learning skills, but also about building character, confidence, and appreciation for nature. Highly recommended!
