The Wilderness Basic Rope Rescue Operations (WBRRO) is an intensive, fast-paced 3-day, 2-night (30-hour) certification program held entirely in a rugged outdoor setting. Unlike urban or structured emergency rescue training, WBRRO is specifically designed to teach search and rescue (SAR) and rope rescue operations under real-life tropical wilderness conditions, where resources are limited and terrain is unforgiving.
Core Curriculum & Technical Skills Taught
The course demands greater physical activity and endurance than standard training, placing high emphasis on hands-on practice. Participants will master:
- Search and Rescue (SAR) Knots: Specialized knots, hitches, and bends required for secure rope systems.
- Anchor Systems: Identifying, building, and evaluating reliable natural anchors (trees, boulders, etc.) to support rescue loads.
- Mechanical Advantage Systems: Building pulley and leverage setups (e.g., 3:1 or 5:1 systems) to haul and lift patients or heavy loads up steep slopes.
- Hardware & Software Use: Correctly operating and managing technical rescue equipment (ropes, carabiners, friction devices) and soft goods (webbing, prusiks).
- Belay Techniques: Implementing safety backup lines to prevent falls during raising or lowering operations.
- Patient Packaging & Transport: Properly securing and packaging an injured victim into a litter (rescue stretcher) for safe evacuation through rough terrain.
The Course Environment & “Wild Camping” Experience
The training takes place in the mountains of Sapangdaku/Babag, necessitating a 1 to 2-hour hike with fully loaded backpacks just to reach the training site.
To simulate authentic tropical wilderness rescue scenarios, SOSC intentionally utilizes a wild camping setting with minimal amenities.
-Water Source: A natural spring is available at the campsite.
-Terrain: Expect stream crossings and uneven, muddy, or steep mountain trails. Footwear (shoes/boots) must be worn at all times when moving.
