Is there really a cobra in Cebu?

  • by

Not to burst your bubble but the answer is NO. The truth is, there really is NO TRUE cobra species found or native in Cebu. This photo attached is the Ophiophagus hannah when translated in greek means “snake eater”.

The Philippine cobra (Naja Philippinensis), Samar Cobra (Naja Samarensis), and Palawan spitting cobra (Naja Sumatrana) that belongs to the genus Naja are the TRUE cobra species found in the islands of the Philippines but not in Cebu.

The name “king cobra” stems from its ability to kill and eat cobras. They mainly consume rodents, rat snakes (its favorite meal); and other species of snakes. They are close cousins of the cobras but are not considered as true cobras.

King cobras play a vital role in the environment. They are our natural rice field plantations pest eaters. They control other population of different snake species in the wild and they are very intelligent animals, in fact it is considered as the most intelligent snake species out there. King cobras cover a vast territory in the wild. You rarely encounter them. They will only attack when provoked or when a female’s nest is being disturbed. They live for about 20 years and reaches a maximum length of 15-18 feet. Considered as the largest species of highly venomous snake in the Philippines.

To conclude the above statement, only the snakes that belongs to the genus Naja are considered as the ‘true cobras’. King cobras on the other hand belongs to the its own genus Ophiophagus (snake eaters) discovered in the early 1800s.
